Trusted Dog & Pet Adoption Services in Saltville, Virginia

Our Mission

Committed to Saving and Rehoming Abandoned Dogs

Hearts & Hounds is a small nonprofit specializing in transporting and rescuing pregnant dogs. We function as a small dog rescue in Saltville, Virginia. We receive the mother dog and her litter. Currently, we can accommodate only one litter at a time, but we have plans to expand in the future! Our goal is to rescue, nurture, and socialize the newborn pups and their mother until they're ready to be taken into a loving home.

We receive mother dogs and their litters from shelters, animal control, and other rescues.

Rescue

After rescuing the new family. We nurture, feed, and ensure all medical needs are taken care of until the puppies are healthy, weaned from their mother, and ready for the world.

Rehabilitate

Now this is the part we can't do without YOU.  We need loving safe homes for these pups to go to enjoy a nice life every bit as good as they deserve!

Their tale

Hearts and Hounds recently took in two momma dogs; Millie and Marion. Both are friendly, nurturing toward their puppies, love attention, and are such good girls.

Millie had seven newborn puppies, and Marion had two puppies who were nearly ready to be weaned. On August 13, Marion and her two puppies went to the vet for a checkup. Marion had worms and goopy eyes, and her milk had almost completely dried up.

On August 17, Millie went to the vet. Initially, she received a good report too, until her heartworm test came back positive. 😢 Millie’s seven puppies had to stop nursing immediately.

We had two options: bottle-feed seven puppies every two hours, around the clock, or see if Marion would accept the litter. Thankfully, Marion accepted the entire litter as her own! We are beyond grateful, and the puppies are thriving!

Millie is sad without her puppies, but right now, we need to focus on treating her heartworms.

"Working with Hearts and Hounds was a great experience- Andy (Hansel) is my first dog, and working with Denise to meet him and go through the adoption process was seamless. She answered all of my questions and helped make sure I felt good about bringing Andy home, and he's been a perfect (if bite-y) companion."
